Thank you for applying to the Fatemarked Facility on behalf of your chosen character. Please answer the following questions, which will allow us to determine whether they are suitable candidates. Be honest and thorough.

1. Character Name: Daniel "Zazzle Poetry" Kinney

2. Canon/Series: Daniel is the grown-up version of that one kid who was always mouthing off in class. Only that kid also grew up to be a surprisingly competent CIA operative during the mid-1990s. Born in 1970, Daniel's parents divorced when he was ten. He'd never really had a "happy" home life, but after the divorce he spent alternating weekends with his mom and dad, who each grew bitter and tried to turn Daniel against the other. He was Danny to his dad and Dan to his mom, and he grew to hate them both and their petty games. He cut himself off from both of them when he turned eighteen, going to college on scholarship and loans, and reclaimed his full name for himself - Daniel. No nicknames.

High-achieving and disaffected young men were like catnip to the CIA, and Daniel thought himself a bold young man, so he applied for a job after graduating. Upon finishing training in 1995, he was sent to Chechnya to meet his new partner.

Jack Metcalfe immediately punched him in the face. Each thought the other was an enemy agent due to a wacky misunderstanding, and...yeah.

The two men's personalities clashed immediately, Daniel's brash nature contrasting with Jack's almost staid one. They spent several weeks in close quarters, culminating in an awkward sexual encounter and Daniel running away in shame. And immediately getting caught by the enemy. Oops. Jack eventually was able to find him and rescue him, but the damage was done; Daniel had already been tortured, and was later politely asked not to return to Russia. Under diplomatic consequences.

Two years passed, and they warmed up to each other until they finally admitted their mutual confused feelings while on a mission in Italy. And they continue to fight crime and the forces of evil to this day. "To this day" being "late 1997".

3. Age: 27

4. Species: Human

5. Role: Sentinel

6. Why do you think your character is a good candidate for the Fatemarked setting? Daniel is a man constantly surrounded by death and danger. He is an operative of the CIA's Special Activities Division, meaning that he does all manner of dangerous things in the name of America. His current area of assignment is Eastern Europe. It is 1997. He is also banned from Russia, for so many reasons. That sort of reputation points to a dangerous man, no? Just the sort of person the Facility may be looking for in a Sentinel. (Also because if they nick Jack as a Fatemarked, Daniel will punch through the universe to get to him. Or at least he will try really really hard to.)

7. What skills does your character have which might make them a good Sentinel? Daniel is trained in hand-to-hand combat, marksmanship, defensive driving, offensive driving, interrogation, and disguise.

8. What traits, abilities, or qualities does your character have which might be the reason they are Fatemarked? N/A

9. How do you think your character will react to their new role in life? Daniel is not going to be happy. And he's going to think that there was some sort of clerical error - he's not the kind of guy you want protecting people, you want his partner Jack (or, as Daniel calls him, Jake). Jake's the guy who's built like a brick shithouse and could probably take thirty bullets before going down, not him. Of course, when it becomes clear that it isn't a clerical error, he's going to laugh himself unconscious. As one does.

10. What are some of your character's strengths?
  • If there's a point where Daniel breaks under torture, we haven't found it yet. It's definitely more than five days. Yay?
  • Can bullshit his way out of most dire situations
  • Is a surprisingly competent case officer
  • Is mentally stronger than most people give him credit for
  • Has good instincts and knows when to trust his gut
  • Can really hold his liquor
  • Talks big, because he knows he can back it up
  • Frightfully observant
  • Good at playing the fool to make people underestimate him

11. What are some of your character's weaknesses? Reasons you should not hire Daniel Kinney, an essay by Daniel Kinney:
  • Hotheaded
  • Drinks too much
  • Will drink the glowing thing everyone at Pennsic warned you about
  • Will fight anyone, including himself
  • Constantly making poor decisions to the point where he's not sure what a good decision looks like
  • Codependent as fuck, which is probably not a quality you want in a Sentinel
  • Replaced all of his emotions with taquitos and Xanax sometime in 1993
  • Would not know a decent coping strategy if it walked up and introduced itself
  • Constantly questions authority
  • Aggressively drives terrible jokes into the ground to the point where they are long past getting a pity laugh (e.g. calling Jack "Jake")
  • Aggressively sarcastic
  • Aggressive
  • Will eat the special food in the fridge you have been saving

12. Does your character have any health problems we should know about? Daniel is being treated for bipolar disorder with both talk therapy and daily medication. His right wrist is the site of a severe burn injury which resulted in some mild nerve damage. This plays up from time to time.

13. Describe a single important event in your character's history. During Daniel's first mission, when he was younger and more of a moron, he ran off in Chechnya after something awkward and embarrassing happened between him and Jack. (Read: drunken sexual encounter.) Running off in the middle of an active warzone while drunk = stupid. He'd already been marked as a CIA operative by his enemies, and when he got off on his own, he was taken unawares and captured. He was tortured and interrogated for five days by a mysterious Russian man before they decided that he clearly didn't know anything. They let him contact Jack once before using Daniel as bait to lure Jack into a trap. Jack managed to rescue Daniel before the building he was left in was hit by a Russian airstrike. This incident left Daniel with lingering physical and mental trauma and even more confused feelings abut his partner for two years.

He's smarter now. Honest.

14. Who is your character's next-of-kin? N/A

15. Tell us about the most important relationship your character has. Daniel is honestly stupidly in love with his CIA partner Jack. He's not even sure what to think about this emotion and is only grudgingly coming to terms with his bisexuality, but Jack is the one person who's continuously believed in him and not written him off as a lost cause. They're not exactly dating, but they seem to have come to an agreement that each of them is the most important person in the other's life. And sometimes they make out.

16. What else should we know about your character that might recommend them to the position? He's secretly Ben Wyatt.

17. What is your character's Fatemark? N/A

18. Please provide two writing samples showing us your ability to roleplay.
